EP01 FAQ | How to Use a Flower Press

Frequently Asked Questions About Pressing Flowers

Whether you’re new to flower pressing or already experimenting with different flowers, these are some of the most common questions beginners ask.

1. How Long Does It Take to Press Flowers?

Most flowers take between 3 and 5 days to dry in a flower press.

However, the exact drying time depends on:

  • Flower thickness
  • Petal moisture content
  • Room humidity
  • Type of absorbent material used

Delicate flowers may dry faster, while thicker blooms can take a week or more.

đź’ˇ Tip: If you live in a humid climate, replace damp absorbent sheets halfway through the process.

2. Why Are My Pressed Flowers Turning Brown?

Browning is usually caused by moisture remaining inside the flower for too long.

Common causes include:

  • High humidity
  • Insufficient absorbent material
  • Pressing thick flowers without preparation
  • Waiting too long before pressing freshly picked flowers

To keep colors brighter, press flowers as soon as possible after harvesting and make sure moisture is removed quickly.

3. How Can I Prevent Mold When Pressing Flowers?

Mold develops when moisture becomes trapped inside the press.

To reduce the risk:

  • Use dry absorbent boards
  • Replace damp sheets regularly
  • Store the flower press in a dry location
  • Add desiccant pads in humid climates

Some flower pressers also place their press inside a sealed zip-lock bag with desiccant packs for extra protection.

4. Do I Need a Flower Press?

Not necessarily.

Many beginners start by pressing flowers inside heavy books.

However, a dedicated flower press offers:

  • More even pressure
  • Better airflow
  • Faster drying
  • Consistent results

If you plan to press flowers regularly, a flower press can make the process easier and more reliable.

5. Can Absorbent Boards Be Reused?

Yes.

Absorbent boards can usually be reused many times as long as they are completely dry before the next use.

After each pressing session:

  1. Remove the boards from the press.
  2. Allow them to air dry fully.
  3. Store them in a dry place.

Proper care helps extend their lifespan and keeps your flower pressing results consistent.
